How to Cast to a Sony Bravia TV from iPhone or Android

Sony makes this easier than most brands: most Bravia smart TVs since 2015 run Android TV or Google TV, and on those models Chromecast built-in is already there. Add AirPlay 2 on many 2019+ models and DLNA or the Web Receiver on other Bravia sets, and there's a casting path for every Sony — CastBrowser picks the right one automatically.

Cast to your Sony Bravia in 30 seconds

  1. Install CastBrowser (free) on your Android phone or iPhone.
  2. Connect your phone and the Bravia to the same Wi-Fi network.
  3. Open a compatible website in CastBrowser and start the video.
  4. Tap the cast icon and pick your Sony TV.
  5. The Bravia plays the stream — your phone stays the remote.

Which Sony Bravia Do You Have?

Unlike Sharp or TCL, Sony hasn't split its lineup across four different platforms — but the model year still decides your best method:

  • Bravia Google TV (roughly 2021 onward): Google TV home screen. Chromecast built-in, and most models also support AirPlay 2.
  • Bravia Android TV (roughly 2015–2021): Android TV interface. Chromecast built-in; AirPlay 2 on many 2019–2020 models (X950G/X850G era and later).
  • Bravia without Android TV / Google TV (mostly pre-2015): Sony's own smart platform. No Google Cast — use DLNA or the Web Receiver.

Not sure? Press Home on the TV remote: a Google TV or Android TV layout means you have Chromecast built-in. You can also check Settings for an Apple AirPlay & HomeKit entry.

Casting to a Bravia Google TV or Android TV

These models are Google Cast receivers out of the box, so the flow is identical from iPhone and Android:

  1. Open CastBrowser and join the same Wi-Fi as the Bravia.
  2. Browse to a compatible website and start the video so it's detected.
  3. Tap the cast icon and choose your Sony TV from the list.
  4. The video plays over Google Cast — play, pause, and seek from the phone.

This is the same protocol a Chromecast dongle uses, minus the dongle. More detail in the Chromecast and Google TV guide.

AirPlay to a Sony Bravia from iPhone

Many Bravia models from 2019 onward include AirPlay 2. On those TVs, CastBrowser on iOS can send the detected video over AirPlay instead of Google Cast — useful if AirPlay is already your habit. Check Settings on the TV for Apple AirPlay & HomeKit to confirm support, and see the AirPlay guide for the full walkthrough. On any Bravia with Google Cast, either protocol reaches the same screen — pick whichever is smoother on your network.

Older Sony Bravia: DLNA and Web Receiver

Pre-Android Bravia sets still have two working paths:

  • DLNA: most older Bravia smart TVs accept media over DLNA, so CastBrowser can send compatible streams and local files. See what DLNA is for how it works.
  • Web Receiver: if the TV has a browser, open the CastBrowser Web Receiver (castb.cc) on it and pair with the code — it turns the browser into a cast target.

Supported Video Formats

CastBrowser detects videos in over 20 formats, including live adaptive streams. Whether a given file plays also depends on what your Bravia model can decode.

Troubleshooting Sony Bravia Casting

Bravia not showing up in the device list?

  • Check Wi-Fi: phone and TV must be on the same local network — not a guest SSID, separate subnet, or VLAN.
  • Disable VPN: a VPN on the phone blocks local device discovery.
  • Check router isolation: AP/client isolation stops devices from seeing each other; disable it in router settings.
  • Check the Cast app: on Android TV / Google TV models, make sure Chromecast built-in isn't disabled under Settings > Apps.
  • Restart the TV: power-cycle the Bravia fully (unplug for 30 seconds), then refresh the device list.

Video detected but won't play?

  • DRM content: Netflix, Disney+, and similar protected streams can't be cast — use the Bravia's own apps for those.
  • Format support: try a different quality or source if the TV can't decode the codec.
  • Expired link: reload the page and let CastBrowser re-detect the video.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I cast to a Sony Bravia TV?

Install CastBrowser, join the same Wi-Fi as the Bravia, open a compatible website, start the video, tap cast, and pick your Sony TV. Bravia models running Android TV or Google TV have Chromecast built-in, so the stream plays natively over Google Cast — no dongle needed.

Does a Sony Bravia have Chromecast built in?

Yes on any Bravia running Android TV or Google TV — the platform Sony has used on most models since 2015. Bravia sets without those platforms lack it; they fall back to DLNA or the Web Receiver.

Can I AirPlay to a Sony Bravia from an iPhone?

Many 2019+ models support AirPlay 2 — check Settings for Apple AirPlay & HomeKit. CastBrowser on iOS can use AirPlay on those sets, or Google Cast on any Android/Google TV Bravia, which works from Android too.

What about an older Bravia without Google Cast?

Use DLNA — most older Bravia smart sets support it — or open the CastBrowser Web Receiver in the TV's browser and pair with the code. Both paths work without any new hardware.

Why won't my Sony TV show up when I cast?

Nearly always a network split: guest Wi-Fi, VLANs, AP isolation, or a VPN on the phone. Put both devices on the same local network, turn off the VPN, and power-cycle the TV. Also confirm Chromecast built-in isn't disabled in the TV's app settings.

Is casting to a Sony Bravia free?

Yes. CastBrowser is currently free with no account or subscription, and Chromecast built-in ships with the TV. Compatible non-DRM web videos and local files cast at no cost.
